C'est vers le milieu des 80s que je découvrais The Sound, grâce à leur double album live "In The Hothouse". A l'époque, ce groupe était loin d'avoir conquis le grand public comme U2, The Cure ou New Order. Pourtant, à l'instar de The Comsat Angels, ils portaient en eux tous les ingrédients artistiques pour rencontrer le succès. Mais ce ne fut pas le cas.

The Sound et Joy Division ont en commun un destin tragique, brisé par la maladie puis le suicide de leur leader respectif. Nombreux sont ceux qui ont entendu parler de Ian Curtis, très peu connaissent Adrian Borland. Et pourtant... il me semble que sans Martin Hannett, "Closer" aurait manqué de splendeur, et ne serait peut-être pas érigé au rang de mythique opus post-punk, ceci accentué par le suicide de son chanteur. Alors que The Sound m'apparaissait déjà dans les années 80 comme un groupe techniquement plus mature, un groupe de scène aussi, avec un leader engagé, à la posture sincère.

Courant 1977, Adrian Borland crée The Outsiders, trio punk originaire de Wimbledon (banlieue de Londres) et sort un premier 7" sur le label de ses parents, Raw Edge. Suivront deux albums en 1978. Vers la fin 1978 Graham Bailey rejoint le groupe à la place de bassiste, en remplacement de Bob Lawrence. Et Michael Dudley (batterie) est recruté pour jouer aux côtés de Adrian Janes (percussions). Ainsi composé et renommé The Sound, le groupe enregistre trois morceaux ("Physical World" EP), pour le label Tortch en décembre 1979.

La claviériste et saxophoniste Bi Marshall les rejoint alors qu'Adrian Janes les quitte. En juillet 1980, The Sound signe sur le label Korova Records (Warner) et sort son premier album "Jeopardy" qui rencontre l'intérêt des rock-critiques, établissant Adrian Borland au rang de compositeur parmi les plus matures et créatifs du mouvement post-punk.

Bi Marshall est alors remplacée par Colvin Mayers, claviériste et guitariste, ex Cardiacs. The Sound va alors donner naissance à un album qui est, à ce jour, considéré comme le plus abouti de leur discographie. From The Lions Mouth, plus mature que son précédesseur, contient la substance du groupe, oscillant entre rage sombre et pop lumineuse, le chaînon manquant entre Joy Division et Echo & The Bunnymen. La production de Hugh Jones est pure, elle met en lumière les instruments et la voix de Borland.

La face 1 est une pure réussite avec des titres comme "Winning" qui ouvre l'album, un plaidoyer à la réussite, mais aussi "Contact The Fact" ou "Judgement". On retiendra surtout de la face 2 les titres "Silent Air" et "New Dark Age". From The Lions Mouth est devenu un 'classic' album au fil des ans. Mais il aura fallu attendre 2001 pour que le label Renascent édite cet album en CD. Depuis, le label Edsel a regroupé toute la discographie du groupe en deux coffrets. Indispensable pour tout fan de The Sound !

Au fait, ce pressage vinyle européen (hollandais) est excellent !

The new line-up recorded three tracks, which emerged on the Tortch label as the "Physical World" EP in December 1979, credited not as the Outsiders but as The Sound.
